Is there any chance now a days that starting new socalnetwork is of any benefit?

Niche social network is working pretty nice and is a goldmine right now.

Don't even bother starting a general social network because facebook is the king and recently Google Plus also kinda abandoned their plans due to FB.

Pick a niche and start a topic specific social network.
 
Of course its possible. But you need influencers to promote your site and $$$ to invest. We are talking about very much money here. If your idea is good look for investors.
However keep in mind even if your idea is great the chance to actually become a global play social network is less than 0.1%

Haha, everything is possible with enough energy and tons of luck. You need amazing developers, money to keep everyone happy until it's ready to launch and a lot more money to launch and actually attract people. Also a twist that doesn't exist on the current social media platforms would be great.
 
Limits are only living in your mind. I don't know you, but I know, that everyone of us can do, far more than we think. At first it always seems impossible, but thats just a intriguing feeling. Good Luck!

There are some limits to what someone can do nowadays, especially without the right amount of money. Don`t lie to yourself.

You would be better off making a fan page or group on facebook.
 
You can do it. But, it WILL require effort. Lots and lots of effort. Not an easy road.
 
People are just starting to get bored of Facebook.

Remember how Orkut and myspace used to dominate the social world and when things got saturated, Facebook came in as a welcome change?

You can do it. Its a very tough path but not something that's impossible.
