why not just use sengrid or mandrill or mailgun?

I presume you were asking if they are free. If so, no. But they are rather cheap and more importantly they do an awesome job of ensuring your emails reach the inbox of your users.

sendgrid/mandrill/mailgun are not for unsolicited emailing, and your account will be banned.
