    Right,

So I have dev expertise and know that I'd need to use the API etc, but... How do I get access to it? What do I "tell" Instagram I'm developing?

From what I understand all apps have to approved; how do you get a bot approved?

    Thanks

Start with a normal analyzer..like something that would give your users 'precious' insights of the behaviour of their crowd! ;-)
As I see it, instagram must get bombared with apps like that

A bot (like FL) doesn't get "approved". They reverse engineer the private API and use it without permission.

Would these bots work by simply emulating a browser? More like a macro?

Edit: looks like the public API is tightly controlled. All apps need to go through a review process.

I did however just find a private API interface on Github. I can't link it for some reason, but it will make things 'a bit' easier :)

    Like Risto said,

They don't ask for permission just RE it.
