I've mentioned this 'tip' before and you can take it or leave it...
If you're at all serious about becoming a staff member, then start hanging out on http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/blackhat-lounge/366784-blackhatworlds-official-irc-network.html. We hire members off IRC about 90% of the time and I'll tell you why. It's real-time chatter and we can get to know you. It's better than simply going off a staff application or your forum posts. Most of the current staff is on IRC, along with other valued members that we are 'vetting' as well.
I'm in no way saying that your http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/staffapp.php isn't important (and required), but if you're serious about joining our team, then don't just sit back and wait for a reply after applying. We get tons of members that wanna be a moderator. Think about the sheer numbers of people that frequent this place - that's a lotta apps. Get involved! Be seen and heard by the people that make the decision whether to give you a shot. Don't just hop on and ask about your staff application, just hangout and be yourself. Use your BHW name on IRC too. Again...be seen and heard.
You'll probably end up talking to some cool people and learning something if you bother to leave the little IRC chat client open and stay awhile.
Like I said, you can take my advice or leave it, but considering DD and I are the only two people here that have the final say on who becomes staff, I can tell you here I look for my next staff member.
