I've mentioned this 'tip' before and you can take it or leave it...

If you're at all serious about becoming a staff member, then start hanging out on BHW's IRC network. We hire members off IRC about 90% of the time and I'll tell you why. It's real-time chatter and we can get to know you. It's better than simply going off a staff application or your forum posts. Most of the current staff is on IRC, along with other valued members that we are 'vetting' as well.

I'm in no way saying that your formal application isn't important (and required), but if you're serious about joining our team, then don't just sit back and wait for a reply after applying. We get tons of members that wanna be a moderator. Think about the sheer numbers of people that frequent this place - that's a lotta apps. Get involved! Be seen and heard by the people that make the decision whether to give you a shot. Don't just hop on and ask about your staff application, just hangout and be yourself. Use your BHW name on IRC too. Again...be seen and heard.

You'll probably end up talking to some cool people and learning something if you bother to leave the little IRC chat client open and stay awhile.

Like I said, you can take my advice or leave it, but considering DD and I are the only two people here that have the final say on who becomes staff, I can tell you here I look for my next staff member. ;)

    Food for thought.

Any recommended IRC progs? I use mIRC, and I'm not feeling the love.

It's funny but I've probably logged on to the IRC 10x or so and 9/10 times there are lots of people "online" but hardly anyone having a chat. Maybe it's timezones or maybe I should take it upon myself to initiate some conversation.

Depends on which client you use.

Most people don't bother to just sit and leave the client open. A lot of us are in different time-zones, so there is slow times.

Use mIRC with a BNC, you're then always connected to the server, your name is then reserved and whenever you open mIRC all open up with a click of a button.

I thought it was just me? >.> Actually, at first thought there was something wrong with the client. But then someone finally said: "Hey."

IRC is how the staff talks to each other about forum issues in real-time, training new the new guys and other private communications.

If you cannot manage to introduce yourself, talk and stay logged on, then I would have serious doubts about your ability to be a staff member here.

It is most active from about five to midnight pacific. Make sure you stick around because activity usually comes in waves, and there are a lot of lurkers.
