Wasn't really sure which section to post this.

I'm moving to another country soon and looking into mobile internet providers. I need to remote desktop to my VPS.
Will I be able to do this through a wireless dongle, and if so, what sort of usage would I be looking at?
The best offer I have found so far is for 15 euro a month for 1.5gb of 3g data. Would this suffice if I was only using it for remote desktop? (obviously not using it 24 hours a day)
Also someone mentioned to me about tethering my laptop to a phone, would this also work?
Appreciate any advice on this.

If you need to just view stats than 1.5 GB per month would be enough. And you can do few normal tasks.

It all comes down on what you use? Try it for 1-2 days and get an estimate data usage. That's the best solution.

Well no, I will be using scrapebox and UNF and also using it to log into my wordpress sites from. I was under the impression that the VPS would take up the bandwidth slack and the remote connection would just use a certain amount to connect :S

Also while I think of it. Is it advisable generally to use remote desktop to a VPS from an internet cafe? Or would I be compromising my security doing that?

Scrapebox will be running on the VPS though, so that won't impact your dongle usage, unless you plan on downloading chunks of data from the VPS to your laptop.

Yes that's what I was thinking. I'm just wondering is there some sort of standard usage for connecting via remote desktop. I'm guessing myself that it would be pretty low, hence wondering if I can get away with the 1.5gb/month plan I'm looking at.

I don't actually know how it works, but I guess it consumes a lot lesser bandwidth than a normal PC would use under same conditions.

As suggested, use unlimited plan. VPS can be run even at lower speeds.

Remote desktop doesn't take much bandwidth. I connect to my VPS very frequently throughout the day using my mobile or laptop. I believe it never took more than 100-200 MB per month with almost 2-3 hours of usage.

Thanks for the replies folks. I'll try a cheap pay-as-you-go when I get there and take it from there

Sorry but why a wireless dongle? That technology is really old.

Do you have a mobile phone? Why not just tether it? Much better reception and no cost to you up front for the dongle.

NO.

Full stop.

All it takes is one keyboard logger and you're toast. You should be blocking all remote desktop connections from non-whitelisted IP's to begin with.

I agree with YourMoneyButton in regards to his last two posts however I would add, from experience, get the dongle too. If the phone doesnt work, for whatever reason, have it as a backup (pay as you go) to cover you for the hours, days the phone is buggered.

if he's going to be using a dongle he's hardly going to be on an open network. and if an open network was the case then make sure you have a vpn handy, i mean you wouldn't do a prostitute without a rubber right? ;)

I think he was referring to using an internet cafe PC via their broadband connection, not the laptop/dongle.

What country by the way?? Honestly making money online (in general, there is always exceptions) really doesn't come down to great internet speed (although it helps). You can always find a local provider in whatever country you are planning on moving

Yes I was. I was thinking in the time before I get sorted with a local broadband company I could use a cafe. But thanks for the definite No
