VPS Question

I was initially thinking that I needed to get a laptop. I can't get work done on the home PC with the wife and kids around. I can't get work done when I'm not home (ie: at work) because I don't have my PC with me.

Then I started thinking about a VPS. If you were to get one with, say, XP already loaded, wouldn't that be like having a 'remote' PC that I could access from anywhere?

I wonder if I'm thinking about this the right way. Although, you can't change your IP address on a VPS, can you?

all you can do with a vps is store files and execute php ect ect. and no you wouldn't be able to change the ip on it.

why don't you just set your home computer as a virtual access point so you can use if from anywhere?

Yeah, I have logmein.com set up but every time I log in either the kids are using it or the wife is using it.

Ya, that's what I do. Remote dedicated boxes I can just log into from everywhere. It's exactly the same as using a home desktop but you don't have to carry it around everywhere.

You can prolly colocate a box for pretty cheap.

Yeah, that's what I figured...maybe a Windows-based VPS would be more flexible and convenient.

I think I'm leaning toward laptop at the moment though.

I have a linux vps. I can do anything with it remotely as I would if it was local.
Alot of vps offers allow you more than just 1 ip. I even have my vps setup on the tor network (large proxy network) allowing me to change my ip at will.

I would image that a windows vps is no different and you can access it with your standard remote desktop.

I think you are confusing vps with a standard cpanel type hosting.

i didn't say you could just execute php that why i had the ect ect. in there but i don't think they will allow you to load it with a desktop OS (some may just havent tryed it yet.) so you wont have the same functionality as a normal pc with windows xp vista or fedora core desktop loaded on it.

laptop or get yourself a low end dedicated, remember a vps is a shared box, your sharing your box with ??? other people running everything from torrent seeds to database servers, kinda takes its toll on how much resources are left for you and you alone, hit me up on a pm/msn if you want a suggestion on some guys who do nice fast dedicateds cheaply (good support too), rather than getting yourself some low end shared box with 256meg of ram for 30 or 40/mo, spend 50 or 60/mo on a dedicated that you have all to yourself

laptop would probably be my preference but a real server also means its strapped to a 100mbit pipe
