Hey Guys,

I've been using Site5 for my shared hosting for a while now and I decided that I needed to spread some of my new websites out onto a new host. I also wanted to start an Adult site, so I went with a VPS running Windows Server 2008.
My question is, is it going to be practical to run multiple Wordpress sites on a Windows Server? Everything I have read makes it sound like its going to be a pain in the ass to set up.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Not necessarily hard if you have some knowledge of how servers work. You'd have to point all the domains to the same IP and then configure the server to answer to all the domains.

Fair enough. I've never used a VPS before - but I'm not technically challenged. I guess I'll just spend some time learning how to set it up since I already have the server.
Thanks for the reply.

In the same situation ... I wanted to get a cheap Linux VPS ($2/mo) to start learning and have some hosted email accounts.

It took awhile but there are plenty of guides, every obstacle had a solution with some searching and in the long run I think it'll be worth it.

While I don't have any Windows experience you might want to consider running some sites on Linux and then host software on Windows. If for no other reason than to get more experience and have more IP's. Just my $0.02.

In my opinion , Linux is much better then Windows for hosting sites. Once when you learn it you will never be back on WIN.

Unless you are a Windows Server expert I would also go for a Linux server - cheaper and, in my opinion, easier to secure than a Windows box.

Get yourself something like VestaCP and you are ready to go. WP isn't hard to install so you should be up and going up quite quickly. Just remember to keep your WP installs up to date, including the core code, plugins and themes!!

First of all you should consider buying a linux VPS server. Windows servers are good for running SEO tools, gaming server etc but for wordpress install i would recommend linux.

Yes you can host multiple websites on a single server using "Virtual Hosts". I have 4 websites running on a single VPS.

My 2 cent advise for you today .. Get your vps from www.webuzo.net contact the support team, tell them how noob you are with vps and wordpress at all and they will get your site running in less than a hour.

The 2 primary reasons why you would use a windows VPS to host websites is the one quoted by fatboy (being a windows expert) or you have to host an ASP based website.
Beyond that i believe the linux VPS is the way to go.
A cPanel VPS is actually even better since it will include all you need to run your web server.

Thanks again for the advice all. I'm able to change my servers operating system to Linux, so I'll do that and have a bit of a play around. Worse case scenario I'll host a Ventrilo server or something on it for a while and use it to learn more about VPS.
