Both VPNs and proxies are used to change your IP address. So, can you use both tools together?

The answer is YES.

If you're familiar with proxies, you might have encountered WebRTC leaks. This is when websites can detect your real IP even though you're using a proxy.

To fix this, you can use a VPN as a backup. By combining a VPN and a proxy, you can avoid leaks. First, turn on the VPN (the location should be as close to the proxy as possible), then connect to the proxy to access websites as usual. This way, even if you leave the system running or refresh the page, your real IP won't be exposed. However, while the VPN and proxy location may be similar, their IP ranges won’t match exactly, so this is not the most optimal solution.

One thing that hasn’t come up yet: on mobile, especially for serious multi-account work, neither regular proxies nor standard VPNs are ideal. They don’t fully isolate device fingerprints, which means accounts can still get linked even if IPs are different. If you're managing multiple accounts on mobile, tools like GeeLark (antidetect phones) solve this much more effectively. They give you full profile isolation: unique fingerprints, clean IPs (via integrated proxy support), and no WebRTC leaks. You can run dozens of accounts without cross-contamination, which neither a proxy nor a VPN alone can guarantee. So while combining a proxy and VPN might help with IP leaks, it doesn’t touch the deeper issue: device fingerprinting. That’s where the real tracking happens now. For mobile, I’d look beyond traditional tools and consider a real isolation platform instead.
 
As for me, it could be expressed a very short way: always use VPNs, but if you need a large pool of IP addresses, use proxies :)
 
To be honest, what you wrote is not entirely accurate from a technical perspective.

Here are the technical facts:
  1. WebRTC leaks in the vast majority of cases do NOT depend on the proxy; it’s entirely on the side of the proxy client you use (like an antidetect browser, etc.)
  2. WebRTC leaks CAN easily happen even through a VPN if, again, the VPN client software is bad or misconfigured.
  3. The combination of proxy + VPN does not guarantee protection against WebRTC leaks, because it all depends on the client settings.
If a proxy user wants to guarantee no WebRTC leaks, they need to carefully configure their antidetect browser or completely "wrap" their whole computer in a router connected to the proxy (this is more of a pro option).

I was also advised by friends to use both. But I was afraid that they would find out the 2 IP addresses and think there was dishonesty so I decided to just use the proxy.

I respectfully disagree

VPNs and proxies are not the same thing, a VPN tunnels all system traffic through an encrypted channel, while a proxy only handles the app/profile you assign it to. That’s why VPNs drag extra overhead, but a clean sticky proxy gives you far more control and stability when running multiple sessions.

I'm sorry but a properly built antidetect browser is the last thing that’s going to spring a leak, because its whole value proposition is patching things like WebRTC, Canvas, WebGL, and TCP/IP quirks. The weak links are almost always the proxy (not intercepting all traffic) or the user’s network stack (DNS, OS settings), not the antidetect itself.

Well, I can say for sure that ML, if not set up totally wrong, will never leak any IP, especially not webrtc. ML has some lets call it unwise default settings and that will trip people up, especially if they are using ML proxies, which are like playing russian roulette, but with 5 bullets chambered.

I agree that once a part of the whole setup starts to come apart, a real IP leak is only a matter of time.

That said, ML leaks some other stuff which is a little bit dangerous, still miles ahead of the other anti detects.

And yes, people do not understand what happens on which layer, and each layer has many little details to be aware of. On l7, you better be able to understand req/resp models very well etc.
 
Yeah, you can use both together. The VPN helps cover WebRTC leaks that might expose your real IP even when using a proxy. Just turn on the VPN first (close to your proxy location), then connect the proxy. For multi-account setups, proxies are usually better because each profile can have its own IP, and they come in lots of types datacenter, residential, mobile, rotating/static. VPN + proxy works, but it can slow things down. I use GoLogin for this it handles proxies and fingerprints for each profile, so running multiple accounts is much safer and easier.
 
almost all platforms insta flag well known VPN ips if you try to do any automation with these ips you will get banned / shadowbanned
Proxies are much much safer and higher quality but it really depends on what you want to do
