VPN vs ISP...WTF?

After seeing Edward Snowden on Joe Rogan's podcast recently, I started getting very iffy about letting big brother track me as much. So I've started using a VPN. I've researched it quite a bit, but there is one thing I'm still confused by.

I know it hides your IP address by creating a tunnel between you and the service, essentially "bypassing" your ISP. But how can I connect to any online server without my ISP carrying the signal to my VPN in the first place? It's traveling through the cable company's wire, so how are they cut out of this process completely? If I didn't pay my cable bill, I wouldn't be able to connect to my VPN, so how are they not in the pipeline somewhere?

Just not getting that part of the tunnel...

You misunderstood something. VPN encrypts traffic. You still get the internet from your ISP, it's not cut out of the process, of course they're in the pipeline.
 
I saw one video that showed the tunnel that is created between myself and the VPN. It illustrates that any data passed through this tunnel is shielded from anyone at my ISP from seeing it. If they are connecting me from the internet, how is that so? How would things like my searches and other sensitive data not be visible, if they are the ones supplying the connection (even before it hits the VPN).
 
You have to somehow send the data to the VPN servers somehow. Without your ISP you can't communicate with the VPN servers.
 
You should use VPN and Tor browser together if you don't want to be tracked.
 
VPN is just a mask bro :) It gives you a fake identity.

Think of it like this.

There are three people you, a translator (isp) and a wise guru( Google). You ask what is 1+1? To the translator, and he translates it into the gurus language who then responds 2 in his language and the translator responds to you with the answer. Anyone who is near you would have heard your question and answer and the translator of course knows because he handled it.

Now with a VPN it works more like this.

There is you, the translator, a cryptographer and the guru. The cryptographer gives you a chart that tells you a way to scramble you message that you will hand to the translator.

The instructions end up making the question "what is 1+1?" look like this: Hand this message to cryptographer "h0w ar3 pig - pig" . You Then hand the note to the translator who doesn't understand anything except the instruction to pass the note along. The cryptographer receives the message, decodes it and whispers the question to the guru. The guru then whispers the answer to the cryptographer who writes down: Hand this to the question asker: "pig- pig ar3 tree". He passes the note to the translator who then hand you the note. You use the code chart and decide the message to get " 1+1 is 2.

So basically the VPN gives you a key to scramble all signals except the instructions of where to send them( the VPN) . You send all the signals to the isp with instructions to send it all to the VPN. The VPN unpacks all the signals and reads where you really want your traffic to go, they send the signals to the website you want to visit, they then recurve the response, pack it up all scrambled and send it to the isp who gets the scrambled message and passes it back to you and your device unscrambles it.
 
You can compare it to a house with the curtains open and closed. If you connect to the internet trough a VPN your ISP can still see you are connecting to something, but because your curtains are closed it cannot look inside your house from the outside and see exactly what you are doing (connecting to).

If you have no VPN everybody can look trhrough your window and see exactly what you are doing.

Also, make sure that you change your DNS server to prevent DNS leaks. Otherwise your VPN is 100% useless.

This is a hell of a good example! Now I get it. So the ISP is still involved, they are handling the packages of data, they have no idea what they have, but they are just moving it along.

But what are the chances that, even with a solid VPN, the ISP could eventually figure out how to open the package and peak inside? Possibly making out some small bit, or maybe a large one?

The message looks more like. &$72€[€=dhzisba and would take years with a dedicated world class super computer to crack maybe even longer. Unless you have the key code to unscramble the message, you wouldn't know. That is how only you and the VPN know because each session has a new key that is unique, so only you two know what the actual message is. Now the problem comes when you pick a VPN that keeps data or is working with whoever you want to hide the info from. That is why people try to use VPNs that don't store data.
 
I read a post on quora saying that VPNs on the market do not encrypt anything. The cost to do that is so high. And the ISP can get your information anytime they want, and they always keep logs. I'm not an expert, but the post get many upvotes.
 
In my research, I have learned that much the security of a VPN comes from their word. So when they say they don't track you, you have to just believe them. I guess that would be the same with the encryption.

Is there a good VPN on the market that have proven these two things to be 100% true (that they encrypt well and don't track)?
