Nothing is safe on the internet we have to learn how to do things in a way that we can try not to get into some hacker attack but still you have to learn as much as possible about hacking before you are able to understand how anything is taking your data. By the way nordvpn is a good option if you want to use some good vpn. I am personally using it

The safest VPN, is the one you set-up, you decide how long should logs be kept in the server and so on.
All you need is a VPS and some basic linux skills, and you get your own VPN.
Stop paying 20$ for a VPN that claims they will keep you safe, there is no such thing.
If you want to do something right do it with your own hand, it is not that hard and there are many tutorials on the internet on how to do it.

What happened to you is a lesson that needs to be learned.

Its a good idea to avoid using personal details on the website while you are exploring them using VPN, VPN should be only used for exploring things, not to do transactions and adding personal details..
If any site is asking to make payment in return for any service or product, avoid adding payment details if you are using VPN....
 
Verify the service provider and check their privacy policy and avoid providing personal details in those sites when you use VPN.
