VPN for VPN. What?

I have a work laptop for my day job that has a vpn on it so I can access corporate network. I work for one of the biggest banks in the world. Although, I work from home in the U.S., I am supposed to live in the city that I am based. However, I want to move to another state within the U.S. without my work VPN recognizing that I am logging from another state.

The company is not open to me working from another state. There are no opportunities within the company in that other state that I want to move to.

I am familiar with VPN's that run on your desktop but I cannot download any software on my work laptop. So that is out of the question.

Is there a vpn router on the market that I can set a port to a city that my work vpn will recognize me logging in from that particular city?

It might be worth mentioning that I am going to live in an apartment complex in this new city until we find a house to buy.

and you will have always a clean and constant IP and you will can use your laptop from any US states without problems.
Just connect to VPN and after this start your work and all will be ok.

Do you have family or friends living at your current state? If so, you will need 2 routers. I recommend Asus routers. First, you would ask your family or friend to plug this router at their home connection, they would just have to plug a Ethernet cable from their current modem and plug it in the power. Then you setup a VPN server, and for this I recommend Asus routers. Now you will need another Asus router at your new home, you will setup VPN on it, so it will broadcast the IP from the router you setup on your friend/family internet. Sounds complicated but it’s actually easy. If you pick a Asus router, I recommend you flash it and install Merling firmware. And make sure you setup a rule that if the VPN server is not responding, to kill the connection, so it won’t leak your ip. You can look it up. If you need help, I’ll glad help you for free, shoot me a PM!
Now, if they don’t care, you can use a generic vpn that is located in your state. But if they look it up they will see it’s actually a vpn and not a home connection. With the method above, impossible to know.

So basically, you have to tunnel the whole laptop (without installing a vpn client) though a proxy located in your work location. All you have to do is set your router in your new location to browse through a proxy which you already setup in your work location, then you can travel to the Sahara if you wish..

A better option...seems like its a tried and true system so go with this...

Yes, all family and friends are located here. I can convince one of them to do so before we move.

Is it possible to only have one port of the router to do the mentioned? I want to avoid any issues with the internet provider or my wife's job that is based in the new city. I don't want either one of them to block us if it shows that we are connecting from my work city. Halfway across the nation.

@TiagoS I will hit you up after I watch some videos on created a VPN server and how to flash a router with Merling firmware. I am not technical guy so I need to get my mind around it before formulating questions.

If they already have a router it’s not an issue, just plug a Ethernet cable to the new one you setup and it should work. You will need just one LAN port to do this. If you are talking about portforwarding, you don’t need to. The name of the firmware is Merlin, i mistyped. You will only need to flash the router at your new home, as the default firmware that comes with The asus routher should do the trick for creating a vpn server on your friends/ family house.

Will they really get IT to keep a check on your physical location through your VPN connection? Can't imagine anyone would check or monitor unless they were actually investigating you. In that case there's probably be other factors like your mail, calling you in for last minute meetings etc.

@dotslash They monitor keystrokes and give managers a notification on questionable words typed and emails sent. They also monitor linkedin inmails sent to make sure that I follow protocol and send mgr notification of something out of compliance. For example, the rule is that I cannot talk to someone about a specific job opening. I can only ask if they are open to a conversation about what they are looking for.

If they do the above then I am sure they have something automatic that tell my manager if I logged in from across the nation.

Everyone on my team, even direct manager, work in other cities. Never a face-to-face meeting. All calls are forwarded to my cell phone now anyway so no issue there either.

Wow, it must be a great job! I'd be very careful then as presumably you'll still have to use the corporate VPN software as well to connect to your central remote access server. So you will effectively be tunneling one VPN through another. If they have any sort of IDS or advanced firewall which detect unusual connections you're going to stand out.

Yeah look deeper into it OP don't want to risk your job

Software might notify them of the new IP address and if they manually look around might see something. Or see your new IP is from a VPN
