A friend of mine gave me a pc that was not working. All I had to do was replace the
memory chip. Now I have a working Windows 7 and it's only a year old.

I am now trying to get VMWare Workstation 8 up and running. Everytime I try
running the virtual machine, the screen turns black as in DOS mode with this message:
    PXE-E53: No boot filename recieved.
    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
    Operating system not found.

I just downloaded the VMWare workstation program. Do I need something else to
    get this to work?

I will be thankful for any help.

There are 8 choices to click :
Create a new virtual machine, Open a virtual machine, Connect to remote
    server, etc...

Which should I choose to run as administrator? Is Virtual Network Editor the
    right one to click?

This is all new to me and I am having a hard time catching on, even after
reading and watching videos on it. I can't seem to find exactly what I need.

you need to create a new virtual machine. This gives you a bare bones virtual machine, now you need to put an os on it, just as you would with a real pc. Those error are the same you would see if you freinds pc had come with out windows 7 on it

vmware is just the ''sandbox '' , just the emulator , to create new small computers from your host ( main computer ) practically you can split the cpu/ram/hdd into several small machines ( and most of the time you can make them to work simultaneous ) . what you see the black screen is actually just boot in dos :) ... of course there is not yet any OS ... since you didn't install any lol . What you have to do it's first to create a new virtual machine , then install chosen OS ... then if you need use this '' guest OS '' ... depends on setup needed pay attention to what kind of network you need on guest os and install the vmwaretools on them will make your life bit easier .

ps . late edit : sorry for late reply lol actually I`ve wrote your msg but I forgot to click the '' post quick reply '' :) alt tab and I forgot about you lol .

I think I have found part of the problem. The pc my friend gave me came with it's
own pc monitor screen which is a small landscape type. It doesn't show everything because
it's so small the bottom cuts off some buttons below. So since I am unable to see
these buttons at the bottom of some pages, I am unable to click on them.

I will have to work on this before I can advance any futher.

Change the screen resolution on the win7 host to suit your monitor ?
Install an OS from a .iso (point the cd/dvd of the VM to the iso) before you boot the VM
