Viruses, Trojans how do you protect yourself ?

I use Linux and run a virtual windows machine with AVG for those windows apps I need to use. Safest way. Only run the apps I have to on the windows machine,, nothing else. Everything else is done under the Linux OS.

What do you think of new solution Nod32, very fast - from scrach programmed in C++
This isn't free but i wonder how's your opinion on that
 
If you are using windows, and if you are looking for a good security level:

I suggest using Kasper*sky internet security or bit*defender internet security, or at least nod32 smart security.
+ using anti-spyware tool, Webroot or spyware*Doctor.

I do the same thing. The software that has managed to do the most damage to my computers over the past few years are always antivirus. (Norton, McAfee, etc.) They constantly automatically delete tools I use (since they're considered "hacking tools") with no option to not delete them, destroy system resources, and are impossible to install. (A copy of legitimate McAfee I installed 4 months ago gave me a blue screen of death whenever I tried to uninstall it.) They're not worth it--just don't download sketchy stuff or check it in a virtual OS first.

(It's worth nothing I used to specialize in reverse engineering and programming--so the times I have gotten viruses I have managed to kill them manually after decompiling/examining the payloads. This obviously won't work for everyone, haha.)
 
i used to like avg free altho lately they keep prompting an update to a new version which u may have to pay for. spybot search and destroy is a great tool for just keeping crap cookies and other nuisances off your computer. crap cleaner is also an excellent free tool for cleaning the pc.
 
Ubuntu has come a long way if you're thinking about making the jump to a more user-friendly Linux. There's Wine and virtual machines to run windows programs.

smart security + Webroot is my choice
 
I run everything even the slightest bit sketchy in a virtual machine now too. I run XP on both my laptop and desktop in VMs under Sun's VirtualBox for all my sketchy software needs :) Recently made the switch to TinyXP at spasm's suggestion and it's great!

Aha, next time some asks me to install security software on their PC I might just tell them to "reverse engineer it". Who knows maybe my grandmother is amazing at it!

This made me laugh +rep for making my day.
 
I haven't got infected for a long time, because i am using linux hehe
 
Ive used NOD32 as antivirus over the past years and I must say I had no problems with any virusses what so ever. Since the big UI update of NOD32 I switched over to Norton Antivirus Gamer Edition (takes only a small amount of cpu usage). After 90 I switched to avast Antivirus Pro 4.8 and I must say I'm verry happy the way it's working!

For spyware protection I have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Protection running.

Hope this gave you some ideas
 
Ubuntu Linux and Windows in VirtualBox. You can run several Windows at the same time or create snapshots to try out software and then if you do not like it revert back to your previous version. I do not run any virusscanner in these virtual windows - just scan these files for virusses before installing them. Booting Windows XP is also super fast like 5 seconds or something to boot.
 
i go for the windows inside a virtualbox or vmware, have a windows only to test dirty things, and before you try anything, do a snapshot
 
These are my favorites in order of preference:

Antivirus:

1. AVG
2. Kaspersky
3. Avast

Firewalll
1.- Kaspersky
2.- Zone Alarm

Kaspersky Internet Security works for me.

I used to think anti-virus was aload of crap.

Until the recent spate of server hacks.

You can be as careful as you like and not download a bean,
but still be caught out when you visit a website that has been hacked
or once that has been designed to pull in a trojan via iframe or encrypted javacript.

Kaspersky will detect the downloand and delete it - dead.

Kaspersky is very powerful it even rip out offending code from html files in a zip!

Just went to a guru site offering 'gifts' - KIS detect a whole pile of iframer stuff going on. May be it's just tracking stuff but it's totally out of order!

Beware of PLR gifts or from 'gurus' that hidden a lot of their crap inside.
Open html file in notepad and check through before uploading sales pages etc...
They are called trojans for a reason!:D

You can't be be cheap on this!
Your time is money etc...

Get Acronis make regular "safe image" backups of your c: drive as back up.
do it even time you install some major app. or a some blackhat script.

This has saved me many a time!

Use window system restore for c drive -

AVG and Kaspersky cannot be on same computer. Kaspersky will ask you to uninstall AVG first.

Choose KIS over AVG

that's my 2 cents...
 
I use CA Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy (Free) and MalwareBytes (Free) ... works very well for me!
 
I clean viruses off 3 or 4 machines a day. 9 out of 10 have norton of macfee on them. The other 1 has no antivirus at all. I love norton and macfee if it wasn't for them spending millions to convince the public they are the best. I wouldn't be making 300 or 400 hundred a day cleaning up the crap they miss. Your best bet for keeping your windows box clean is.

1. Avira or Avast antivirus
2. Malware-bytes
3. Superantispyware
4. Spybot
5. Use your head when dowloading.
6. Stop surfing the donkey porn.

None of this is 100%. You still might get viruses. That the perils of using windows. But If you do get anything run the utilities I listed in safe mode or better yet from a clean machine with the infected drive as a slave.

Of course the best way to keep your box totally clean is to switch from windows to anything else (i.e, MAC, Linux)
