Viral content sites: still profitable?

Hi all,

First of all, I want you to know that I have been lurking around for a while, but haven't made an account. So I did read some threads about this subject. Unfortunately most of those threads are from before 2015. Others are only journeys, but they never get updated anymore.

I have a background as a copywriter and journalist. So I have been taught in what ways I can target at audiences and how to look for subjects that interest, entertain or move my audience. Personally I am following a lot of 'fun viral content sites' on Facebook. I DON'T mean bullshit like 'She Complained Of A Headache. Then They Looked In Hear Ear And Saw A Tiny Face' like but humorous stuff or mind-blowing stuff. I see Brightside as an example.

Are such pages still profitable? Or would I only be wasting my time? - I still have other plans too .

Depends how cheaply you can drive traffic. I'm not sure how profitable it would be to drive traffic from FB since organic reach is pretty much garbage, so it would come down to costs for paid traffic on their network.

A better approach is to buy traffic from sponsored content networks. If you set your layout right (strategically placing ads around the content) you can get a positive ROI - but this also comes down to how much you're paying to get each visitor and how much you earn, on average, per visitor.

people here not talking about a method not means some one not doing it, do proper research and jump on it.

It's not worth it any more, don't waste your time.

Questions like this won't do you any good because the person voting or commenting could be a potential competitor that doesn't want new competition.
It's best to try it yourself.

Even if you fail. The lessons you learn from this project can be applied to future businesses.

That's the answer.

I would say it's not worth the time. Only look in our country, Dumpert is doing great and has been there forever, skoften does ok but skoften has tried to launch a couple other viral sites and they failed. I know why you want to do this because when I wanted to start some sites in the beginning viral sites was coming to mind also because some of them are doing so good but in general at current times it's a waste of time unless you got a huge budget and a seasoned team.

It doesn't work anymore. The next update facebook is gonna seperate the post from pages and friends. it's gonna put an end for this kind of viral sites.

The big established players will carry on making hay, but newer players will struggle, unless you have big budgets.
