Can anyone explain how I would go about doing this to get backlinks? Is there any service that mass submits videos to video directories?

yes , tubemogul and traffic geyser for example can't think any others for now ...

tubemogul is very good for video submission, especially since it's free. Traffic Geyser is a very nice membership if you can afford it. I'm curently using TG with great results. It provides elements beyond just submitting your videos. If you're just starting out I would suggest tubemogul as TG can be pricey.
