Verbosity of sitemap.xml

Hi BHW.

I have a simple question regarding sitemap.xmls.

I usually keep them short, listing only the main functionality of the site.

I have just seen that one of my competitors (in media uploading niché) adds entries for each new upload (=video, mostly).

This got me thinking, what is a good approach for handling sitemap.xmls?

Keep it short, make it gigantic, or is there a golden ratio such as "do not list all the content dynamically, except for the top 100, maybe"?

as g uses the sitemap to crawl and understand the structure of ur site....i will make the xml map as detailed as possible. also u can check the efects of both scenarios in wmt.

I am worried about an upper limit. Right now I have around 30k uploads if each had their entry in sitemap.xml, Google would come to my site with hatred as of bandwidth and processing required to crawl through them.

Or is it not the case?

Guys at Stackoverflow say max 50000 URLs and 10MB in size for a sitemap

If you are reaching anywhere near 50,000 URLs and not being regularly crawled by Google, you might as well give up.

I'd get a sitemap made for all 30K items if they are each unique attributes to your site [posts, images, pages, etc]..

Google won't hate you, so long as you optimize it well, they'll rank every part of your site somewhere [when TRUE relevance is found]..

And who knows you may [should] just get a big boost in traffic!
