I am making a forum but vBulletin is too expensive. I tried bbPress but now that it's a wordpress plugin it sucks as a standalone forum, I can't get forum categories to show in the menu as categories and blah blah blah. Very disappointed with bbPress's lack of compatibility.

Somebody PLEASE give me a good alternative for making a forum...

phpBBFree, well supported and plenty of mods available

vBulletin is the best there is, but paid as you know
In my opinion, SMF is the best free one. Though I do wish there was a better free one.

Not sure I would agree. At one time (i.e. circa vb3) they were the best but vb5 is horrible and the way they released it with half the features missing and no roadmap was about as bad as things can get if you rely on a piece of software to run your business. It's very obvious they're trying to do a cash grab.

I'm on vb right now but considering IPB or perhaps even Xenforo

For a free one: MyBB. I tried it recently and it was easy to setup, it's stable and loads fast.

I use PHPBB with custom code and the Silver template. No problems.

Vbulletin is not only expensive, but the amount of money you spend doesn't help when you have to spend 100s of man hours customizing it for your needs. And forget about seo! You'll need another 150 dollars for vbseo.

Unfortunately, it is the best forum suite.

I hope someone comes along soon and creates a better product.

I recommend mybb it is free and most blackhat forum using mybb
