Variable template for image grouping and banner placement?

Hi,

I am going to start a new website with some locked content but also a big gallery section in which I'll place banner ads. However, I don't want to go with the usual banner placement.

My idea is to group some pictures together, i.e., placing a medium sized picture with two smaller ones in some kind of container (thumbnailed images). I think I may be able to put a banner in place of a picture and make it fit perfectly by selecting one that fits well with the subject of the other pictures as well as the style, colors, etc.

Anyone has any experience doing this? Will my visitors hate it or is it possible to get more clicks doing this?
Ultimately I will have to give it a try and see what happens, but I'd appreciate any comment or suggestion!

Also, is there some easy way to do this using a custom template or should I just go with custom html snippets for each page?

I don't think there is a specific ready to go theme for this but here http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/60595/creating-a-gallery-custom-post-type you will find instructions on how to make a custom page as gallery and you can edit the code to post ads every X image etc.

You can also customize sizes, boxes and other things and possible find a theme that would best fit this change.

May not be much but is a start.
