BHW might be the wrong venue for this question, but maybe not, so I figure I'd shoot this out to you guys. I sell my own service, not affiliate or anything. Have any of you ever installed live chat to your website to try to increase sales? I've been shopping around and I can find this service for about 40/mo. Which isn't bad in my eyes. If I can retain some of those bounces using chat and convert them to sales, I'd pay it. But I just wanted to reach out to you guys and see if you have implemented it? had success w/ it? recommend another option?

    All feedback appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know what business you are in but I have tried live chat and I have found that it
can be very unproductive. The prospect should be sold through your site and contact you
for more information. Live chat operators don't know your business like you do and give robotic
responses where as you personally would be able to sell them on the finer points.
Unless you are prepared to man the live chat portal yourself you could be loosing potential
    clientèle.

ox- I would be manning the chat as the operator. With this in mind, do you feel it may be a worthy avenue to grab more leads?

win- that livezilla looks great, but I am using a linux server. that software will only work with windows, correct?

You can use if a visitor to your site contact you of course if you are at the pc, or you have one of that phones with internet connextion, I think may work too.

And since you know when you have visitors on the site, if they visit say few pages, like product page and after your contact or about us page, I would contact them, a small chat window will pop up on theyr screen and you can ask if they need any help, depending in what you are selling work very well.

Also for returning visitors, wondering around in your site, I would contact them, too.

That works very well if you sell handmade products or anything that you can do custom for them.

Usually people visit a product page, but the product is not just exactly how they like, but if you offer a custom modification, they will happily buy.

I made 4-400 hundreds deals tru the chat in the last week, that probabily I would have missed if I had no chat on the site. talked to the visitor and had the money in my paypal in 20 minutes.

I use livezilla, but also woopra has a free version untill I think 30000 page view a month or something on the lines.

I reread your post, yes I think for a service too will be certanly worth, and also give some sense of professionality, behind it, can also say that is the secretary chatting or any other figure in your company, or live friendly how I do and say that I am the actual artisan making the products, that because in this area, people want to talk with the actual person doing the job, that can really understand what they want.

yo, thanks for all the responses guys. i found a solution that awesome. if u need a chate solution, g00gle zopim. they have a free, non-ad version that can be integrated with your existing instant messenger. i just set up a gtalk and im using it now. works so fresh. the free version allows for up to 3 convos at a time. easy to start up too, just input 3 lines of java in ur <head>. you cannot customize color scheme or skins with the free version, but if you need to the upgrade is only 9/mo.

You might also want to give olark a look.

It's a paid service, but they have a free account good for 1 operator, and 20 conversations a month. Might be a good place to start. And it takes seconds to drop their javascript on your site. And $15 a month if you need more conversations.

Price seems right for one of these hosted live chat things.

I use http://www.zopim.com on a couple of my sites. It definitely increased my conversions when I was actively waiting around on the live chats. The best part is when you're logged in it tells you where the visitor came from and what page they're on. It's also cheap. They've jacked up the price since I got it, but there is a free version and the one man version is only $9 per month.
