Using the word "Free" in domain name?

Quick question.

Does using the word "free" in my domain name count against me at all in regards to SEO purposes?

no, why would it?

I didn't think it did at all, but I remember reading some garbage about it can count against you or whatever. I read it right around the time all those email/zip cpa's started gaining popularity: "freexbox360now.com", etc.....

However, I would that they would penalize those sites anyways regardless of domain name.

No, I don't they'll hurt you for having free in the domain. Or else sites like ***************** wouldn't be ranking well....and they do rank very well.
