Hi Everyone,

We run a very small agency for small local businesses for which we primarily run Google Ad's campaigns. Much of our client list comes from cold email outreach along with the obvious word of mouth. Our cold emails (which don't perform great in all honesty) come from our scraping efforts for which we scrape business websites for individual niches. The data we collect from each website comprises of Email, Phone number, location, postcode etc..

We've only just got our social media side of things up and running and are planning to push daily content. Adjacent to this however we would love to use our scraped data to generate custom audiences for which we can then target on facebook - along with some LAL audiences.

What we're worried about however is the risks associated with breaking this part of FB's TOS. However, from our thought process we cant fully see how facebook would ever know if the data used is from newsletter opt ins, or from scraped data ? Something like a bought list would obviously raise red flags when multiple people are uploading the same data....

Can anyone chime in here on just how risky this is and what precautions can be made ?

Interestingly enough, due to these businesses being small, the vast majority of the phone numbers are mobile numbers which we can pair with location data (Town/City) which we believe would probably yield the most matches. Whilst we also have the corresponding email addresses only a fraction of them are 'personal' emails and instead are mostly business domains. We remain unsure if we should even try those sorts of emails incase it raises flags. On the flip side of the coin, its reassuring knowing that the data gets hashed (SHA256) before hitting their servers and matched - however when facebook realises the matches are against business pages their algo might flag that as suspicious..

Any input would be appreciated!

On a side note, i've also toyed with the idea of just creating a couple of other facebook accounts and have a 'dummy' business page which i all run from private proxies - but then you still run into the issue of the payment details being a match...

Thanks!

I think using scraped data to create custom audiences on Facebook is high risk, Facebook has algorithms to detect unusual data patterns, such as a large number of emails from the same domain or IP address. To minimize the risk of using scraped data, avoid using sensitive data or data that can easily identify specific users and always monitor campaign results and make adjustments as needed to ensure compliance. Follow Facebook's policies
