Using other people's content on your site

Hi,

What exactly is the copyright law on using someone else's article on your site?

Lets say I found a keyword relevant article on http://www.scientificamerican.com/. How can I use that article to boost my site? And what's the legality?

Can I just post the content verbatim as long as I provide a link back to the original source?

It depends who are you copying. If you copy content from a small blog they usually can't do anything. You can copy content from article directories if you provide a backlink and this is legal even encouraged. In most cases if you link back to your source you won't have any problems.

reword' instead) that article, substituting synonyms, etc. then you have...

A NEW ARTICLE - which you can submit to directories, will rank for keywords, and should be published first on your own site.

People trying to game Google say it takes 35% of 'different' content to escape the duplicate blackhole. I find it's more like 10%.

But that 10% has to be related to the keywords and descriptive words in the article, not substituting 'plus' for 'and', 'me' for 'I' etc.

Once you do 5-10 rewrites it get surprisingly easy. If it's beyond your skills, get an outsourcer to do it for you for $2-$5 per. If that's too expensive for you, you're in for a rude shock in the IM biz.
