Hello,

I am starting a website which will be an informational website. For the country other than my country. So I want to know that can I use that country's name in the domain ? Does it get me any trouble when I will apply for Adsense ?

Thank you.

I don't think so, country names cannot be copyrighted. People must be able to use the country name in publications and other things and the name is just a description, not some artistic work. So, copyright doesn’t apply.

Country names cannot be trademarked either for similar reasons, actually. Countries aren’t brands and companies are allowed to make a country name part of their own name as brand name. So, no trademark on country names either.

A government might take some actions against such a domain holder, though. If the registration is done in bad faith, they can report this to the ICANN (https://www.icann.org/) who operate on the DNS servers world-wide. Even if you register your domain name with some registrar, the ICANN could decide to block your registration in favor of the country or other entity. Without the DNS registration, your site won’t be accessible.

Still, if someone registered a country name before the government did, all the government can do is make a bid for the domain name that the current owner can’t refuse. (Or just ignore it.)

Take a look at

Cnnindonesia or cnnbrasil, both use country name as domain. It depends on the site that you make.
