Using main keyword in h1 and h2 both

Not really. especially if you're using it in the page title and other headers too.

main in h1 and variations in h2.

Here's what I do: Main keyword = H1 and first paragraph (naturally mentioned) and one of the main headings

LSI keywords and "Also searched" kws are H2

It do not help much but include one in h2 for sure or use rank math plugin. it will help in sorting out basic on-page seo

Yes, you can use the main keyword in multiple headings if it makes sense. But it's not mandatory to use it in all headings. You should strictly avoids it if it looks unnatural or over-optimized.

I don't often put them in H1 and H2, only when absolutely necessary.

As long as it looks natural and you don't already have it your meta tite/desription, url etc. Otherwise, id use related keywords and mention the main in content about 1-2 times.

It's not the best practice, a much better solution would be that you place your main keyword in h1, and make some kind of variation for h2, or even better, to put there other phrases that you also want to target but that aren't exactly your main keyword. I usually do it like this and have good results.

In general, you can use the main keyword in more than one heading if it makes sense. However, you should avoid using it.

You can use it in both, there will not be an issue. I did it in past on some articles in my website and they ranked well.
