I'm not sure if they are 'very popular' but they are certainly gaining in popularity.
Quite a lot of new tech startups in the USA are using .io domains.

It is a very useful option if you find a good name, but as far as I know the price is almost 4 times bigger than a .com domain

I love .io domains, the only problem is the price. If it was in the $10 range, it was the best alternative to .com.

I am bit biased towards .com so I would prefer .com over .io.
Also .io is also pricey.

.io is fine. A few days ago I got myself a domain with my first name with an .ai extension. Lol. But there were not many choices left.

I think they are popular because of greater availability. For example, it is easier to get the techstartup.io domain then getting techstarup.com.

Anyways, to answer your question, using a .io domain for a tech blog is not bad and you know that. Personally, I would only use another extension when the .com is already taken.
