I’ve been running standard search campaigns for a while, but I’m realizing that most of my conversions are one-time purchases. I want to shift focus toward increasing customer lifetime value. I’ve heard remarketing can help, but I’m not sure what specific strategies to use.

How do you structure remarketing campaigns in Google Ads to encourage repeat purchases, upsells, or even subscription renewals? Any examples or tips would be appreciated.

One thing that worked for me was segmenting remarketing lists by purchase type. Instead of showing the same ad to everyone, I ran tailored upsell ads to customers who bought a lower-tier product.

Don’t just push another sale right away. Run remarketing ads that educate or provide value first, then follow up with offers. It builds trust and keeps people engaged with your brand longer.

If you collect emails, sync them with Customer Match and run remarketing across YouTube + Display too. It stretches beyond just search and reminds customers across channels.

whatt are your current metrics ony your current campaigns? Might help understand what the best strategy would be.

Remarketing works well when you group buyers by what they bought and show them ads to buy more or renew.

One thing that worked for me was segmenting by purchase frequency. People who bought once got shown upsell offers, while repeat buyers got loyalty or bundle discounts. It keeps the message relevant instead of hammering everyone with the same ad.

If you have an email list, combine it with remarketing audiences. I ran ads to past buyers that matched my CRM segments and it was crazy effective. The synergy of email + remarketing lifted my repeat order rate without hiking spend too much.

Don’t underestimate the power of timing. I sell consumables, so I set remarketing campaigns to kick in around 25 days after purchase, when stock usually runs out. That alone boosted my CLV because customers were reminded to reorder at the perfect moment.

Try layering remarketing with dynamic product ads. Instead of just generic “come back” ads, they see the exact product they browsed or bought before, plus recommendations. It feels personal and nudges them to try more of your catalog.

I’d also say test ad copy that speaks to relationship, not just offers. “Thanks for being a loyal customer” or “Complete your collection” converted surprisingly well for me. It’s not always about discounts, sometimes people just need to feel valued.

This depends on your site structure, of course.
You can use RMK to help users advance in your funnel (keep them engaged and send them back to the last step they've been to pre-drop), or to targetted prior buyers to just but another time.

That being said, if you want them to just buy again, there are ways simpler and cheaper than Google Ads. Not saying you shouldn't incorporate remarketing in your account, but you should also use other means outside google ads for that. Email marketing can double your LTV over night while you can use remarketing to both improve CvR and LTV, so double the efficiency.

To this I'll also recommend sending an automated email. Done this with a client and it went very well.

For remarketing in Google Ads to increase CLV, I recommend setting up segmented audiences based on purchase behavior. You can create remarketing lists for people who have made a purchase, and target them with personalized upsell or subscription renewal ads. Additionally, offering discounts or limited-time promotions can encourage repeat purchases. Dynamic remarketing is also great for showing users products they’ve already shown interest in. Ensure your ads focus on customer retention rather than just acquiring new leads.
