I thought that due to the rest of the website text around the article it wouldn't be considered duplicate content?

yes, don't used it for your money site or it will read as duplicated content. Only used fresh and unique content.

That can be used only for tier3 & tier 2 link building. not for money site
Here's the decision-making process:
1. Is the content any good? I mean, does it deserve to rank for the keyword on its quality alone? If no, forget about it. If yes, move to the next question...
2. Do you have (or can you build) enough of authority to outrank the original(s). If no, forget about it. If yes, go for it.
Better approach: pay good money for somebody taking the best content out there and making it even better. If you truly have the best content out there, it's possible to outrank even pages that have better SEO (to a point).
