I have a small doubt, which has been hovering over my brain since last few days. I have a friend who creates websites using unlocked themes. It means that he unlocks the theme and uses it without paying any money for the same. I am sure it's illegal, but I just wanted to know the negative aspects of having such a theme for your website. Please share your views on it.

    Thanks :)

Sometimes Nulled theme file is infected by Virus and it will harm your Site like :
    Easily get hacked
    Infected by Virus

So better before using Nulled Theme scan it first by Using Virus Total

I doubt he uses Nulled theme files. He actually cracks the paid themes. Wait a minute, I am confused now. Are both these theme types one and the same? I am bit ignorant on this issue. Thanks

I'm not 100% sure what is the Difference between Nulled and Cracked.
But "Nulled" is more common when you're talking about "Illegal Theme"

If you download nulled or cracked themes online, there's a good chance they could contain malicious code and insert hidden backlinks on your site, or hijack your server as a mailer.

If you do it yourself, the disadvantages are:

You won't get free updates or security patches.
You won't get support in the developer's forum.
You're stealing from a developer that probably isn't charging that much for the theme anyway.

Many nullers null the original themes and insert their own version of malicious code into the theme. They may create a loophole into the 'nulled' theme so that one fine morning, your site is not yours any more... The theme is an entry point into your site and one of the main attractions for the visitors, so why give away the lock and key of that important door to a nuller?

Already tried repping you twice today, but it says that you need to spend some reputation before giving back to srb888. :D Thanks for a great reply. I was thinking of using one such theme, but now I might better go for a paid version.

Well yeah malicious code is a problem if you do not have the knowledge to remove it.
Another aspect that I would like to bring is the ethics. A developer created the theme with so much devotion and you use it for your site without paying him/her. that's not cool atall. :(

EDIT: If you talk licensing, then no one can do anything to you, because Wordpress themes and plugins all have to be GPL 2.0 licensed. That's a rule. So, you can modify it if you have the source.

I have received that +Rep already, and many thanks for that. God bless! :)

You can use the theme on a local site, and you may use many other themes just to see which one best suits your site. You may then test all the features offered by the theme. It will also help you add (or remove) more features. Once that satisfaction is achieved, you may purchase the original theme. It may be very affordable too. I think that most of the themes are very affordable and are beautiful and advanced. Buying the theme will also help the web designer to design better sites in the long run. :)

Since many years, I have been using Artisteer to quickly develop my own themes, and after creating the theme, I add to the features and its looks. Knowing some CSS, HTML, and PHP will help create good themes easily from these sites. Advanced designers can develop whole sites from scratch (writing their own codes), but that is for the advanced coders, I still don't belong to that group though. :)

You can still achieve very advanced things with such applications without tiring or exhausting yourself. Nowadays, I don't even download the nulled themes, I screen-capture the homepage, create a modified Photoshop design from it, and then convert it.

Artisteer helped me become a better web designer because the initial site created using Artisteer helped me modify it, and try new things over it easily without actually creating everything from scratch.

BTW, I am not using the latest versions of that application anymore as those versions are less than professional quality IMO.

many ppl want to try theme before actualy buy it , so if you go that way this things can be handy

this one detects malicious scripting on websites :

    Code:
    http://www.unmaskparasites.com
and this one will check the website for known malware, blacklisting status, website errors, and out-of-date software

    Code:
    http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/
    and last for wp users

    Code:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exploit-scanner/
    my 0.02$

Yes, latest versions would have less quality compare to professional...

Not all nulled themes are secure, but if you have some PHP knowledge you can easily detect if there is something that shouldn't be. :) I have done that many times for my needs or just make combinations from more themes :) If you want to be sure that the theme you've downloaded is secure, install Exploit Scanner or some similar plugins.

Nulled themes can make harm to your sites but cracked themes or themes which are downloaded by others and then shared for free are of no harm u can enjoy with it!
