Hello,

Anyone here ever bought a used car ?

I want to have my first car but I don't want to spend too much.

Is it worth it to buy used car ? Any advice when buying a used car ?

Be sure to have them install a new radiator belt, those things always go first. And they're super hard to find ;)

Where I live, they sell radiator belts in gas stations... In case of extreme emergency (your radiator belt broke down in the middle of nowhere) you can use lady stockings as temp radiator belts, they'll hold up for about 50-60 miles. Were you referring to transmission belts?

Anyway, to the OP, if it's your first car, figure out what's your budget, any buy the car that's close to perfection regarding working order. If the engine, transmission, gearbox, clutch, suspensions are in good working order then you're set. Those cost most when it comes to fixing it up. Also make sure the car wasn't involved into accidents other than fender benders. That's the basics of getting a new used car.

The rest like the manufacturer, options, power are just extras and cost accordingly. Remember, you need a vehicle that will get you from point A to point B. All you need for that to happen is a vehicle that runs and will run for a while without additional costs other than gas, oil and filter changes or an occasional wheel bearing or bushing change (which aren't that expensive).

I have bought a couple of used cars. I would encourage it, even of you have money for a new car as you will get a better car for your money. If you don't know much about cars then take a mechanic with you as there are so many things that could be wrong with it that the average person would never know to check!
 
I think most people buy used cars. New ones are not affordable by most.
Used cars can be good, as long as you look at the owner history ( few owners the better) and then the mileage. So if it has like 100000miles then i wouldn't pay much for it.
From there on you really can't judge anything on your own without an expert from a mechanic. You arrange to meet up with the guy who has the car and take it to a mechanic of your choice (with him of course). The mechanic then does a quick checkup and gives you a recommendation.

All in all, don't worry to buy a used car, just don't rush into it. Good luck.

Take somebody who knows alot about cars with you to check it out.
There are some very good write ups online that go Step by Step through evaluating a used car...something you could do yourself.

Get a Honda, Manual tranny preferred.
 
I normally buy new but when I bought used I review Consumer Reports to find the best used car value and then use Kelly Blue Book to price a car. Buy the most car for the money rather than falling in love with a particular model. I have had good luck with Toyota and Chevy but that depends entirely on the model and who owned the car previously.

Look for that little old lady that's selling her car if you can! That really works, I know someone who bought a 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing from a little old lady!
 
I would advice you to buy a 3 years old car, as the car would of hit their major depreciation, always check if there is warranty on the car, if not you can always buy a warranty.

Make sure car is well under 50k milleage. Whatever used car you buy, make sure you buy a warranty.

I agree with coco don't buy a very old car
 
I can't imagine every buying a NEW car again. Complete rip off. You lose so much value in the first month it's a joke.
If you are in the US, go to Carmax. My wife and I have purchased our last 4 cars from them 2 of which were a Lexus and more recently a MB E350.

We stick to vehicles that are no older than 3 model years with less than 25k miles.
