Use instagram pictures on blogs?

Hi there everybody,

I don't really know if this is the right forum for this but if it's wrong, move it please :)

So, if I download pictures from instagram that I would like to use on my blogs, would that be very much illegal? And if it is, what are the odds for someone to like sue me or something like that? I would like to use like instagram pics as thumbnails for posts, and as "featured" blog posts and stuff like that.

Yes it it is technically illegal but the chances of getting snapped are pretty low.

Mostly when you hear about people getting busted for copying images, it's either stock photos that they haven't paid for, or professional photographers / content producers who actively try to find copyright infringers. Some random guy uploading his pics to instagram is unlikely to be scouring the web for instances of people using his photos.

In terms of penalties you're unlikely to be sued, especially because you are in Finland and not the US. They will first send you a cease and desist or a DMCA takedown notice (to your domain whois or your host), at which point you would take the photos down and swap them for something else. I would recommend not replying to them at all (just take the photos down), but if you do, claim it was a crooked designer or something - don't admit personal responsibility. It's highly unlikely that it would go any further than that.

I find that many photos on instagram actually are pretty decent in both quality and motive, so I'd really like to use some of them. :)

Yeah you can find some really awesome pictures on instagram that you can use really well. try using them.
 
If there is a person in the photo, you would require a model release to use the image.
 
As already stated above, I doubt that the average joe taking a photo and editing it with Instagram isn't going to be looking around the internet for his pictures. Even if someone did come across your image, you could always kindly take it down.
 
I saw your picture which you use Instamatic its really good one. Its really very pretty.
 
I think it's best to credit the owner. You just need to mention the username of the uploader and I think it's okay not to link to it. It'll be better that way.
 
Any of you know about some tools which can download users all images ?
 
instagram take money from peoples photos.
Can see why you cant do the same, use what you want :p
