USA residents do you say smacking or spanking ?

Weird question I know, it is however IM related and I am referring to the kind of 'spanking' you would do to a naughty child not the kind you do with the dirty girl from the bar:cool:

So which term do you generally use ?

That would usually be spanking, when I use it. Not to say I wouldn't mind smacking an ass or two, but I'm usually out there to spank it instead. :P

On a side note, why do Brits call your ass a "bum". In the US if you used anything like that it would be your buns but brits use bum.

The polite way to say bum is bottom, so bum is just short or slang for bottom. This comes from the French word bom, I presume we have changed it to bum over the years, other than that I don't know really!

Actually the word bum is very rarely used now by anyone over the age of 8, it's arse for most of us. I'm mean the word we use, not our sexual preference
 
Wow this has turned into a 'bum' discussion, I didn't see that coming.

Thanks for your reply guys and gals, it would seem the correct phrase for me to target would be spanking.

In regards to the 'bum' discussion in our house it's arse!
 
Hitting a child on the butt is called spanking in the US.

Hitting someone across the face is called smacking in the US.

In our vernacular, smacking refers to using the palm for as blow, instead of a fist. So you would smack someone when you are spanking them, and you would smack someone across the face for insulting you, you would smack your palm in your face for a face-palm, you would smack someone upside the head to knock some sense into him.

Here "spanking" is generally used for using the palm of the hand across the someones bottom, regardless of the reason for it. (With the exception of being used to describe an act of self flagellation).

The term "getting your ass spanked" is used to describe an embarrassing defeat.

Spanking refers to hitting children,and fetish stuff. Smacking refers hitting a hot girls ass,to get her to notice you.
