As portillo said, it depends on what you are using them for. I use .com's thru .info's and everything in between, but I wouldn't put something I was trying to brand on anything other than a .com
.info's work perfectly well for some things as do .us
I personally don't think it matters as far as SERPs go. The only reason you see more .com's at the top of the SE's is that many of them have been around for a longer period of time and longevity is big deal to SE's. Obviously doing SEP work and updating regularly have something to do with it as well, but age is definitely factor
but then i read that last week, google 'accidentally' dropped all the .info domains from the index for 24 hours. if they'll do that with the .info, they'll eventually do it with the .us too, i'm thinking...
If your target audience is primarily US based, then it would be an advantage to use a .us TLD. Google suggests that they consider these TLDs to be targeted towards country specific audiences.
Definitely depends on the user, SERPs wise, you should be ok with a .us domain. Usually what keeps you from ranking high is that most .us domains haven't been optimized and most are pretty new and still in the sandbox period.
