Apparently we all hate anything but .com, .net, .org.

But, is it bad to use a URL with a nice name but a bad ending?

Lets say for example that the following were available:
    porn.ws

Would you buy it or something similar? Or is that .ws that much of a turnoff.
I guess the real question being, does that .ws work worse with indexing, etc?

The only other reason I can think a crap ending is bad is that people aren't used to them.

    Yes, very true!

One thing that I have been wondering lately. It is to do with the Country extensions. .ca for Canada, .uk for the United Kingdom, .us for the USA etc.

Lets say that you were to setup 2 web sites for UK Mortgage quotes. One being a .com and the other being a .uk. I wonder if the .uk web site would outrank the .com website in the UK because it has to do with Mortgage quotes in the uk. While the .com domain would outrank the .uk domain everywhere else because the .uk domain would be relevant to only the United Kingdom.

I live in Canada and recently registered a couple of .ca Domains because they were good names and were not available under .com, .net, or .org. Shortly after I registered them, I started wondering if it was a good idea. I started thinking that my rankings might improve in Canada, but everywhere else the rankings would suffer. Hate to spend a lot of time on those domains if that is the case.

Anyways, just curious. Not going to lose any sleep wondering about it. Thoughts? :)

It also does it on the location of the server. I have .co.uks hosted in the US and have .coms hosted on UK servers. Because .com is international if you hosted a .com on russian servers, it treats it as it would a .ru

Well, we have kinda seen the rise of .tv domains, and they seem to have no real impact on ranking power

(despite the fact that Tuvalu is kinda sinking and probably hasnt got the power to run any server farms :p )

some .ca domains rank well specially on google canada searches i'd stay away from .info .cc and so on because they have a bad reputation with the search engines

I would not get .ws. for ranking purposes. From all my googling I have never once seen a .ws in the serps. That being said if porn.ws was available for cheap and I would probably buy it as I am sure there is a mug out there who would think it is valuable and pay a premium for it.

Here is a really easy way to see that .ws is no good, put in sex.ws, and you get no sex site or even sex specific ads (you get ads promoting .ws). That being said the only definitive way to check is to put up an exact match domain with a super low competition keyword and see if you can rank easily.

If I was to do a porn site I would not bother with organic ranking instead I would get a short catchy memorable domain, then promote via reddit/r/nsfw and bing

I live in the uk and I have seen sites ranking for high value terms coming from .ca and .au, but I would say if you are targeting a specific country getting that countries tld and local hosting is ideal.
