This is just my idea, but I'm sure it would work fine. I'm sure you've all heard of websites like tinyurl, bit.ly, if you were to set up one of these websites and have a good amount of traffic going to it, you could modify your script over.
When somebody trys to shorten a affilate/refferal link, you replace their affialte part with yours, so for example index.php?username=james would be changed to index.php?username=alex - They'd be driving traffic to this shorternd URL, but it would display your refferal instead of theirs!
When somebody shortens a ebay/amazon etc, you could quickly stuff the person goign on it, obviously their interested in buying a product, or they wouldn't go on the site, so that's another easy cash maker.
