So I am building an Amazon affiliate site and I have an EMD of my main keyword, let's call it besttennisshoes.com.
Now every post is targeting a specific long tail of this main keyword, for instance best tennis shoes for seniors, best tennis shoes for children, ...You get the point.

My question is, which URL structure should I be using:
    - besttennisshoes.com/best-tennis-shoes-for-seniors
    OR
    - besttenisshoes.com/seniors

I fear that the first option might be overoptimized (contains main keyword twice), but I don't know how if Google would count the main keyword in the EMD?
Anyone having experience with this? Thanks in advance for your input.

Go with /seniors - it works like a charm for me. And it allows you to subcategorize the product pages with a shorter URL, e.g. /seniors/diabetics etc. (maybe not the best example, but you get the point)
There's no difference for Google but when it's shorter it looks better, and the user may even remember it.
    Also, use breadcrumbs.

If your domain is exact match, then it's best to go for second option. That seems good.

Your example target search term is targeting editorial content... listicles, product reviews, buying guides... a.k.a. blog posts. A search for "best tennis shoes for seniors" largely yields articles and blog posts. The first store category that appears is #12. So if you are making an affiliate store category page then it might have trouble ranking for this term. I would recommend for this specific example that you use some form of editorial content to rank for it that advertises or reviews the affiliate products.

Keep in mind the Google considers all of the follow as "matches" for the example search terms:
    • athletic
    • athletic shoes
    • athletic shoes for elderly
    • best
    • best athletic shoe
    • best elderly
    • best shoes
    • best shoes for elderly
    • best shoes for seniors
    • best sneakers
    • best tennis
    • best tennis shoes
    • besttennisshoes
    • elderly
    • footwear
    • senior
    • seniors
    • shoe
    • shoes
    • shoes for elderly
    • shoes for seniors
    • shoes-for-elderly
    • shoes-for-seniors
    • sneakers
    • tennis
    • tennis senior
    • tennis shoe
    • tennis shoes
We know this because Google makes the relevant hits bold in the SERPs.

Here are the URL factors that correlated strongly with rank position for the example search term:

Thanks to all of you guys. I will go for second option indeed. Better to underoptimize (is that even a word :) then overoptimize.
