Ok not sure why you want to remove your data but if someone wants to recover it, format will not do shit. Data will be still recoverable. The only way to remove data is to destroy hard drive. (they have hard drive shredders) take out your hard drive and drill holes through it and hammer it down.
if you have a virus and just want to remove it format will be good enough.
I did some projects in various chase branches where I had to remove data from their computers.
its hard to advice you without knowing what you did. Did you scam somebody or sold pirated software? You know depending on what you did they can trace you right?

You need to zero out everything on your HDD. Honestly, though, you're better off destroying it. Drill holes in it, smash it with a sledge hammer, let it burn for an hour, and throw it in a lake.

Not being nasty but your copywrite stuff is still on the server ? so why wipe your hard drive ?? when they have all the proof they need ??
The best thing you could do is to BUY a cheap HDD!!! Trust me I am a computer engineer and I've always found a way to recover data from a dead drive! So If youare really in trouble REMOVE the old drive BURN it (be carefull to burnthose flash memory's that the drive has) IT MUST BE COMPLETLLY TOASTED! and no engineer in the World could recover anything . It is not only the discs in the HDD but alsothe memory that it has.

I have an idea for modifying a HD with a CO2 charge to propel acid into the HD's interior, for people that need to may need to destroy a HD remotely. Some kind of USB trigger device, and from online anywhere in the world, you can connect remotely, type in a password and acid sprays all over the HD's platters, rendering them unrecoverable.
Fire is a cheap and easy way to make certain it's gone forever; just make certain the fire is hot enough. They can be disassembled with a $3.00 Torx screwdriver. If Law Enforcement really wants you, you won't have any warning. They don't call or write in advance.
Did a job for a US Customs LEO, and he said that they can seize your laptop when you cross into the US, if you refuse (or fail) to give them access to any password-protected data they might want to look at. They can send it off to a forensics expert for analysis. I think there is a market for selling custom products like this, for people that would rather see data destroyed then put into the hands of "someone else", whoever that might be. Governments, thieves, etc...

I'll second the DBAN/Hammer combo. Though using thermite to melt the platters is an acceptable alternative.

How come nobody mentioned LLF? It flips everything to zero on the magnetic surface of the platters inside hard disk. Some tools can even write random bytes several times onto the sectors before that so no computer forensics lab could ever decipher what was once there.

If you are SUPER paranoid:
1. Encrypt your HD, using Truecrypt, for example.
2. Use the highest level of security in DBAN to wipe it. (This will potentially take a day or two.)
3. Set it on fire.
4. Post the reason you are destroying the drive on the internet where it will live on forever, essentially making steps 1-3 useless.
