It's really hard to earn with Upwork nowdays.
Even if you are a real guru in your speciality - you will spend couple of month before you will get a good contract.
And it will take you at least a year to get some full-time offer with affordable rate.
You can get better jobs and hourly rates registering as US citizen.
The old trick to boost new account:
You can make another jobposter account and hire your jobseeker account to complete the job.
Remember Upwork takes 20% of the payment.
Also remember that Upwork may freeze or even delete your account at any time without any significant reason.

It will be nearly impossible for you to start working on Upwork and actually get hired because nowadays they are very strict and don't allow random newbies. If you're really serious about it, please go to a professional academy in your country and learn from them. Without proper guidance from experienced freelancers, you will only waste your time.

I personally think post covid freelancing platforms have become kind of saturated and it is incredibly hard to carve a space out as a newbie. Better to set up some other kind of a funnel to get clients like maybe try to grow your X or LinkedIn account.

Op, try to find emails in the job posts and contact buyers directly. Try to search the company name, it's usually the username of job poster and contact directly.

Review farming for upwork is a thing. You also need a good portfolio.
Another old trick is to create a job poster account and post job(s) in your specialty. Then take a look at all of the portfolios that are sent by people applying.
That is your competition, study them and make your portfolio better than theirs.

Yeah it is. 80 connects cost you $10 and applying on a post usually cost you 16 connects. That's $2 per proposal. Upwork claims they do this to reduce spamming and eliminate less serious freelancers. Unfortunately, this tactic does not work, or at least don't have a noticeable effect. I still come across job posts with over 100 proposals.

It is for to make money, upwork is there to make money for upwork. Try to get free credits/connects, thats how it reaches 100 proposals.

Of course they are trying to make more money. Removing AI-powered proposals, reducing less-serious people on the platform and all this is just bulls**t. They are just trying to mask their own gains with a carpet of righteousness
