It's like any marketplace, offer great service/product, look after your clients and you'll do well.

Nopes. It is not. Nothing is worth these days. Upwork, home work.... Etc..

On a serious note, if you are a noob there; quit trying.

For freelancers? Yeah I'm always hiring coders on there for my teams. They make darn good money. Even our VAs... $5.50/hr @ 60-80 hours a week. One told me she just bought a house and sent me a big thank-you message - it's darn good money in developing countries.

If you are on Upwork you will need some special skills or you will need to create good cover letters to stand out. There are many thousands or more people trying to compete with you for virtual assistant and data entry jobs.
