upwork fees = a crazy joke ?

Hey,

I just received an email from upwork saying that the fees are increasing :
Before june 2016: 10% fees
After june 2016: 20% fees (under the first $500)

full details here, but it's crazy to make the fees x 2 !!

the other freelancer plateforms will have many more clients tomorrow (at least me ;))

too bad, i loved upwork

I'm glad I checked to see if anyone posted about this. Here's their new pricing page, I won't be using them anymore, or more likely I will just talk to their contractors on skype and do a private deal. This is gonna hit a lot of people;
-Workers need to raise prices
-Buyers need to lower prices to maintain budgets
-Many jobs are small ones, which means this will have a potential chilling effect for labor on that site, almost the equivalent of the real world effect of raising the minimum wage, it adds to the cost of the original product which can act in a deflationary way.

A good opportunity for another site to step up to the bat..
 
Yeah crazy for fixed price smaller projects for people. Same as fiverr, but of course the lower end of the spectrum. Makes it less appealing for people to work on smaller one-time projects, so assume they just want to push to larger projects so they can make more on the % the now charge for cc and that is more than even individuals can get --> Bet they pocket some nice $$$$ with just that additional fee.
Guess use it to get clients / or find freelancers and then see if there is any other platform to switch over to.
 
it's just stupid to raise the fees...
there are much more competitors in 2016 for freelancer marketplace. i was using them because we can find every kind of freelancers (IT, writers, translators...)
but higher fees + a plateform that is really slow since months + a new (and bad) page for clients to search freelancers...
i'm done with them

Any other plateform to recommend ?
 
I am so going to find another platform. I love Upwork but this is getting worse. :(
 
10% already was rather high, but lol at 20% and 3% processing fee to you, -23% fee in total, lololol....
 
I just logged in to start a thread....Good to see I'm not alone in thinking it's completely nuts. "Gouging" is the word that comes to mind.

I plan on making some connections during May through the site and then contacting them to do business off-site.

A shame, as I was primarily using upwork too.
 
It is crazy that they are raising their fees. I understand that prices rise, but to me someone is being just a bit too greedy......
 
Start working on multiple platforms and once you have enough work to leave that fee-gouger, then do so.
 
Any suggestion for other platforms to join? I am primarily using Upwork to look for clients. I miss oDesk so much more now.
 
Seems like this is the new biz model for micro job sites... I sold MyCheapJobs last year and the new owner immediately did the exact same thing... did a mandatory 30% fee hike on the buyer of the service.

I think the owners think there is no difference between $5 and $6.5 for a service... I guess we will see
 
They want to increase profit, they don't care workers. I will find another platform.
 
They are crazy, just making things difficult for everyone to reach their revenue targets.
 
Try moving to guru, haven't used it but heard some good things about it.
 
They merged two companies, closed out the market a bit and are now squeezing it.

The astute saw this a year ago and started their own sites so they could get rid of the fees completely.

I am on Upwork and think the price rise is awful. Their reasoning that it rewards longer contracts makes no sense, who on earth earns $10000 to gain the 5% fee bracket? Most of the contracts will be under $500 ensuring they gain a lot more money.

That all said, and I do think it is a really heavy price hike, if you have skills to offer and have a good work history and profile on Upwork, I think you can up your prices to absorb the cost. Most people who stay on will need to do this as 20% is a bit much.

Time will tell, a lot of people are going to leave that's for sure.

Upwork providing good results but they increased price its not appreciable.
You can try out other freelancer sites providing good service with low cost.
 
Mate, Upwork turned into Fuckwork
I also received that mails. For first 20 minutes I was speechless. I'm working here for last 6 years, now I have 11040 hours billing + 607 job profile. Must I'm going to leave these site. Though freepancer.com also have limitations but there you can get more facility. Already there I have one year developed account. May be I'll continue these one.
I also knocked the community service center but they didn't response me.
Hello freelancers!!!! We are the owner of independent occupation! why are you fall in tension? Try to shout ..........leave upwork..leave upwork.
 
So, sorry to bump but does anyone know any other platforms that are more friendly to freelancers?
