Is uploading gameplay on youtube illegal? for example, I record my self playing NBA or Farcry and upload it. Is this infringement?

Why not? It is allowed and legal. I've seen countless of gameplays on yt every minute a lot of channels became well established partners.

Actually, for some games you will need a license to upload gameplay videos and make money off it. You can get the license from machinima or companies like that.
It's only illegal when you're participating on a closed beta where you have agreed with terms or signed out a NDA for the same.

Thanks for replies. I just upload pure recorded game play and no commentaries. Games makes a lot of views. Pewdiepie channel have more than 1 billion views.

Doing play-throughs of games on youtube is actually hard if you want to make any sort of money on it. By monetizing with youtubes inbuilt advertising network, you'll make little to nothing. To get the higher payouts you need to join a gaming network like Machinima. The downside to this is that banks will give you better terms for payday loans than Machinima will for you to be on their network. If you get large enough and you're not on an approved network, Machinima can have your stuff taken down.

Pewdiepie seems to have no problems, as long as you do a commentary, and even better if you have a video of yourself on it too, from what i've learnt about this, you don't actually need a network to join, since pew doesn't have one, and most of his videos are pretty up to date.

It's not illegal, it falls under "Fair Use". I've uploaded commentaries and just straight gameplay for years. I'm now partnered with a network, but even before that I could monetize it no problem with and without a commentary with it.
YouTube doesn't care as much about the visuals, they've cracked down hard on the audio portion, because it's easier to catch.
So for an open world game, or part of a game that isn't a cut scene, it more than likely won't get blocked UNLESS it has in game music playing in the part you uploaded.
For instance, I upload tutorials of how to collect all the hidden items in a game, the clips are usually all under a minute and the only sound that's in them is the in game sound effects, not the in game music. Being as the in game sound is generated based on what I input when controlling the character, the amount of possible combinations YouTube would have to scan for would be unimaginable.
Bottom line is, if you don't make it super easy to catch, they probably won't bother you.
