Unusual Linkwheel Effect

I am currently producing linkwheels on an large scale, testing out a variety of large and small models with different interlinking structures. One linkwheel I created was based strongly on the diagram below. It was successful, but in a very odd way.

I optimised the linkwheel to target my keyword by including my keyword in the url of my money site and my web 2.0 properties, as-well as in the titles of the content articles on each property. I also built powerful backlinks to each web 2.0 property with my target keyword as the anchor text.

The result - I rank for loads of keywords associated with / variations of my original keyword target, but I am nowhere to be found for that keyword!

This is bizarre because some of the keywords I found myself dominating seem more competitive than my original target! - which I selected on the basis of low competition (and yes I do know how to check)

For example, my keyword was "xxx xxxxxxx" and I don't rank for it, but I own half the front page for "xxx xxxx xxx", the only difference being the added space.

It's not a disaster as I get plenty of traffic from the other keywords. However, I am at a loss as to why this might have happened. Any ideas?

keep us posted and let us know if this is just the google dance.

The last linkwheel I did, I had a bunch of sites dissaprea then return after a week or so. Strange things happen when you do this stuff

On my testing i have found that you need to have the keyword that you are going after to show up EXACTLY how it is, in the titles, descriptions ect.

So lets say "pink fluffy dogs" is your keyword, you gotta have that exactly how it is to rank for, no putting extra stuff in like "pink cute and fluffy dogs"

Its fine to say in a title "See the worlds best pink fluffy dogs" but when you start breaking up the keyword by putting extra words in the middle, i find that starts to mess things up.

How do you manage to work out such complex patterns?

Theres loads of variations, this is just one of them that I have seen. I use a different one from lemonarian. Search the site for it.

Dont know if this helps, but when I do a linkwheel, the title and description always use the exact wording, but I also make the very first words on the page/post, the term I want to be ranked for.

@oni3350, I used my exact keyword for: all urls, all content titles, all backlink anchor text, and 2-3 times in all content!

i don't now much about seo but some time ago tried to rank for certain kw and did comment spam mostly with the kw xxx xxx xxx as anchor and had variables only words in different order , but most of my backlinks on BKlinkwatch shows my anchor is best tips for xxx xxx xxx rahter than what i put as name on blogs =/

Everyone uses link wheels different, but uses the core system of inter linking web 2.0 websites and your main website together, you could easily expand 1 link wheel to 100's of websites and links, but it's a very boring and long task if you do it by hand, which is why so many people don't bother and end up complaining when they spend 10 minutes building a link wheel and don't rank for a new keyword.

i hope you find your answer cause i would also like to know. I dont like this thread because NOW i know that i should backlink my 2.0 props on my LW:D but its a good thing (even tho it was common sense in the back of my head)!

good luck!

Alex Brooks, I hope you don't think I'm complaining :) I fully completed my linkwheel as per the diagram above, and it is providing me with targetted traffic. I merely want to shed some light on this curiosity. A friend of mine seems to think I "over-optimised" for that keyword and G sees it as spam... but that seems unlikely to me.

Well as you've already mentioned the keywords your ranking for are more competitive than the main keyword you were actually targeting (presuming you used quotes when testing keywords?), it could be that the SERPS for x, ,y z keyword phrase are/have changed (G dance), but not for your main keyword, could also be onpage factors, but that's doubtful.

There's other things you could check, such as your anchor text phrase percentages and so on.

my thought is this is not complicated. Google has its way of looking at things. We all try and guess what that is and sometimes we get close other times not so close. I've heard rumor that Google will pull the targeted keyword out of the content and then see if it can make sense of the content. Some call that LSI

My thought is this....we try and target certain things....google looks at our site and says...hmmmm this looks like it fits for these keyword phrases. That being the case I'll rank it for those keywords. And here you go....

The other issue is time....the longer the process runs it appears that google starts to understand what we are trying to say with our site and gets closer to what we want.

Always remember this is not an exact science...I don't remember when I first posted that diagram but we have since modified what we are doing and it seems to be working.

testing testing testing...thats how you get good at this

Congrats to Micallef......he now has good data to start tweaking what he has to improve it.

One of the changes we put in place involves modifying he web 2.0 properties we submit to and link from.

We may submit an article to sites 1 - 10 then submit another article to sites 1 - 10 but change where the links are pointing. The submit the next article to sites 11 - 20 then the next we may mix it up again.

with the large number of web 2.0 properties you can submit content to these days you could take 20 spinnable content packs and submit those for the next three months and build quite a backlink network...it just needs to be planned out.

Well done to Micallef

I think it's more of a context related issue. While you linking via you anchor text etc, google also analyses the surrounding content and many other factors to determine what keyword&url to show in it's results.

For example:

If your keyword was "acai berry" and you built a link diagram as above and had content about the health benefits acai can provide.... The result may be that you rank for "acai berry health beneifits" instead of the keyword you intended.

good point...we target keywords that way (more bang for the buck so to speak)

Now i use the same title from mine focus hub on the properties as title, description and anchor text.

by theway does it matter if i post the same 2 posts/articles on every propertie?
or should i adjust each post/article abit on each propertie?
i meen with this "does they need to be unique on each propertie?"

i finished one linkwheel a few hours ago, dunno how quick it is, but is see mine target keyword and website already on the first page from google.
but it aint no high target keyword.

now i am gonna extend the properties with a new linkwheel and with a high target keyword.

lets see what happends

ah nvm, i got all mine answers in this post:
