Untie main page from a geo area?

Hey Guys,

Thanks in advance for your help, I am in need of advice. I have a site that is currently tied to a specific geographic location that I would like to "untie" it from that location. I instead want to have a page where local SEO will be focused. What is the best way to do this? I will be adding links on the main site and navigation saying "New York office" but mainly I want to rank better nationally on the main site.

Any suggestions on how I should approach this?

How is a site tied to a geographic location? If you are the owner of the site, you are free to design it as you wish.

Right, I guess my question is better clarified as follows:

I want to focus the main page on ranking nationally instead of on the local keywords, while focusing the new local site on the localized terms. Just as an example, I want to rank the new page as "Plumber in New York" while ranking the new page as "Plumber". My main concern is losing the rank for the local keywords, so what do you suggest is the best way to go about this in order to transfer the rankings as best as possible on the new localized page?

Does that make more sense?

You can use 301 redirect If you want to remove content from old url address to a new url location. After that, you can build your main page targeted at broader level.
