Unnatural link warning. What next ??

I got a client, that he received unnatural link warning from google through webmaster tools before 5 months ago. He lost all of his rankings and needs to retain all of those rankings back again. SEO has done by third part company by monthly for his web site and web site owner asking me to fix this. How can I proceed and where I can begin?
I know that, I've to remove those backlinks. So I need to find backlinks that built by previous SEO company. How can I accomplish this? What are the tools we can use to find backlinks?
I've received webmaster access and saw there about 400 backlinks. Do I need to remove all those backlinks or need to find more. ?
If I remove all of those 400 backlinks in webmaster tools and is it enough to send reconsideration request to google?
Any help really appreciated. Thank you.

You need to remove all spammy links, which in most cases is impossible. Remove as many bad links as possible (check the links in Webmaster Tools, as not all of them must be spammy). You can write to webmasters and ask them to remove the links. After finishing the process, file a reconsideration request in Webmaster Tools. In the request list the links you were unable to remove. Plea you are guilty and promise you will not use spammy techniques anymore. The site will loose the rankings. After they reconsider, start linkbuilding again, but do it the right way. ;-)
 
All you have to do is remove the blog network links they bought into. Don't remove anything else.

It will take months to recover. Keep building links and be careful of anchor text ratios, you don't want to be caught out by the Penguin.

But how to find spammy links? any tool other than web master tools?

Actually I asked from previous SEO company to provide me the previous link building reports. But still I didn't get them. How to find blog network from web master tools? any idea really appreciated.
 
So no more ideas???
 
I've gotten advice here to use scrapebox to find all the backlinks to that site, there are also tools such as ahref, majesticseo and semrush that will show you those. If your client is paying you a good buck this will deff be worth it, you could remove a lot of them just be reporting them, I guess when you do that you will see a lot of them are do not follow since they were done months and months ago and that was the trend back then. Good luck!
 
Also check to see if there is a lack of anchor diversity in the links, or too much velocity (too many backlinks acquired in a short time to be 'natural').
 
You can use tools like majesticseo or ahref to get the list of backlinks to the site. And you need to send out the mails to the webmasters of those sites requesting to remove the links. I think this will take hell lot of time and all you've to do is wait for them to remove it.
And don't commit any time frame for this as you won't have any control over removing spammy links.
 
You can also send reconsideration mentioning some of the competitors has done negative SEO. Most of the time reconsideration won't be successful.
 
I have sent you a SEOMOZ Account in the PM. I would suggest you the OSE and check for the page authority and domain authority. Based upon the scores you can determine which has to be taken down. You can easily get to see upto 10000 Backlinks for the site.

Tell your client sorry but you have no experience doing this. If you are asking all these questions then go get a easier job like ranking client sites that are no penalized and not taking on projects you clearly have no idea how to proceed!
 
F trying to remove all those, I would start over. If he's not up for that, tell him you can't guarantee anything and do your best.
 
I have tried for months to recover 2 of my sites that was hit with the unnatural links penalty. Honestly, none of them came back in top 100 for the keywords. Before the unnatural links penalty, it was ranking top 10. I rebuild the site from scratch and add new articles, paid attention to my anchor text ratio, on-page optimization, etc and within 3 months I was able to rank the site to top 10.

So my personal advise is to stop wasting your time, instead focus on building a new site from scratch. It will save you time and effort.
 
Rep added for your help. Are you saying remove links which have less page authority and domain authority?
What is the minimum level?

Did you remove backlinks?
 
It's difficult to remove all the links and it depends on the type of backlinks. I would first remove the links which has more OBL & from low PR pages. You may sort it by OBL(descending) and use the list as input to a whois tool to get the emails. Then blast the mail to that list.
 
The message basically means: We saw unnatural links pointing to your site. If we like your site, you'll be fine. If not we'll tank your rankings. The only way you'll know our decision is if your rankings drop several weeks later. Have a great day.
