Looking to purchase this new silo theme - Ultimate Silo Storm - does it really do a good silo structured site? What should I look for in the theme to make sure it is a good silo theme?

Not surprisingly, I've studied the demo sites

I have identified a problem ("category" appearing in URLs for some articles in a silo), but hopefully it can be gotten around by using the theme in a certain way

The actual silo structure is fine

I don't promote 4 levels deep siloing - which the demos use - but by not creating sub-categories, you should get a 3 levels deep silo structure

After spending a few hours reading this post: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...-wordpress-silo-sites-using-free-plugins.html ; I bought this plugin: http://www.siloplugin.com/ .... I only bought it recently and haven't had time to set it up yet; I don't think the theme matters, but not sure.

The plugin does the work - the choice of themes is simply for "aesthetics" - i.e. the look the purchaser thinks is most suitable for the site they want to create

If we had not provided modified and tested themes with our plugin, then support would not have been possible - we simply could not provide solutions as to why this or that theme would not work with our plugin, given the thousands of themes available for wordpress

Thanks for your response. I have your silo plugin / theme 1 and 2. I like them both and am using them successfully.

I'm not going to get into comparing demos vs demos, or features vs features here but categories in url is not a problem with SiloStorm.
If you prefer not to have the usual wordpress category base in your urls then the usual methods (such as no category base plugin) are available. Removal of category base can potentially cause problems with other WP plugins (hence Yoast has removed that the no category base feature from his WordPress SEO plugin - and I've seen him say category base removal has little benefit anyway.) - but for pro-removalists you can just do the usual no category base removal plugin thing ;)

You can have silos as deep or as shallow as you like with SiloStorm. There are loads of different ways people like to set up Silo Sites so the option is there if peeps need it - its level agnostic.

Theme does make a difference for convenience of usage. If you want to do strict siloing in a regular wordpress theme you are going to have to do some code editing to most themes to stop them from generating out of silo linkages through links to categories, tags, archives, author archives, menus etc etc, and to get next post / previous post functionality to stay in silo. There's a whole heap of subtle things that SiloStorm does in that respect - things that a plugin alone cannot easily do, not to mention styling it so it all hangs together nicely, plus also the benefit of all the HeatMap Ad Placement functionality that HeatMap is most famous for. ;)

Yes, it's not professional to bash other people's efforts (unless they truly deserve it)

What I was trying to point out is that I spotted something odd on the demo sites - that there appeared to be "main" articles and "more" articles - and that they had 2 different URLs - i.e. "Category" appeared in the URLs of one set, but not the other set, even though both sets of articles were in the same silo

I think it can probably be avoided by some option in wp admin - i.e. don't enable something that makes it happen - similar to not having a "related posts" widget in the sidebar that wrecks the siloing if you have it there

I am known to be brutal when evaluating silo site softwares - I think I was very restrained in this instance
