I would say it totally depends on what your goal is with the content..
If you want people to read your content, and truly be interested and then click through to visit your site...then id say go for totally unique content, it will also allow you to better "sell" and show your point of view to the visitor.
Unique content for sending traffic to your site...
BUT: if you simply want content for the purposes of backlinks, then i truly dont think it matters TOO MUCH...Make sure that the content is at least 40% to 50% unique and you will gain good links..
