Unique Meta Description vs Copied From Content

Hey guys what's up? I'm curious if there's an effect in terms of SEO if I get my meta description from the content itself?

I mean, I know it's kinda lazy but I have a client who have a ton of missing meta description and it's a real pain to craft unique one on each of them.

I'd like to hear your opinions guys, thanks!

'Unique', meaning carefully crafted descriptions to entice Google users to click on your result instead of any of the other blue links.

'Copied From Content', meaning let's see what Google considers a good description, or if it's feeling lazy how it only takes the first sentence from the content

To answer your question, it makes a difference in CTR, and to some extent that seems to get you higher rankings, apparently. It can be a pain in the ass, though, with a large store with thousands of products and no meta-descriptions...

You can rewrite good descriptions and titles from others instead of just copying
 
I am glad that someone post this question, as I wanted to ask something similar. I would like to hear SEO experts from BHW.

So I have an e-commerce store an have around 500 products. I have different description for each product, but when it comes to SEO Meta description I just copy my product Title and product description of course shorter. I never know is it good or not for SEO.

What I can see from other websites they don't have meta descriptions shown on Google search the same as products. They have more general descriptions like it is for a Collection.
SEO experts - Can you please clarify this. TY

If you can't make meta description for all the pages.... Then atleast write for some important pages like home page and popular pages.
 
It would be way better if you craft a meta description that wasn't copied from your content. It's not that difficult to create one. Also, meta descriptions need to be engaging and compelling. It has to lead your readers into clicking that link, into opening your entire page and into reading your content fully.
 
Although it would be much better to custom-write these meta-title and description, writing something that is catchy, human readable, and can pull in visitors based on the hype, like you mentioned, sitting down and writing hundreds of these metas would take so much time, and may also cause brain-drain.
Another way around this would be, when building the site at the initial stage, always consider the first and second sentence of the first paragraph - to include the keywords that you are targeting, and try make it attractive and interesting.
And when you install a SEO plugin on your WP, if you did not manually enter the meta info, they will normally take the first and second sentence of the first paragraph instead for the meta-description - so you save effort in that aspect.

Yes and this is exactly how my store look like. All meta is pulled from product description, but I think that is the wrong way. For example if I sell T-shirts and I have a collection of T-shirts 100 of them, what would I write in meta description. They are all almost the same but different colors and logo. So what should I write in meta description for each of them. If I write "We have a great selection of T-shirts in different colors and sizes' for example what would be something different for each one of 100 T-shirts?
