Understanding Pinterest's Search Algorithm

Hello, I wanted to make this post to see if anyone could offer me some help understanding Pinterest's search algorithm.

When searching Pinterest for users to follow, it seems very difficult for me to find recent content. For example on IG and Tumblr you can set parameters in your search to only show recent content, however with Pinterest you can only choose to search all pins, boards, or pinners.

Another thing that is odd is that when I search, the age of the content varies dramatically.

For example, I'm searching for male targeted users to follow who have liked similar pins in the last 4 weeks.
Sometimes when I search I see pins from 3 days ago, sometimes 1, 2, 3 years ago!

It seems odd to me that they show such aged content as first page results for fresh searches, however that is probably valuable in it's own right because if you can get enough pins your content can stay pinned to the top for years.

I'm hoping someone from this community will be able to shed some light on how I can better find targeted users to follow.

You can follow repinners of popular pins your in your niche. That should give you targeted audience.
 
Yes, but how do you search for only the most recent pins?
 
If you know the website, go to pinterest/source/website.com. That will show you the latest pins from that site. Not sure if it will give you what you want. Also, you can click on the general category for that certain pin. Those are somewhat new, I think. But there are no search filter for the latest pins.

Keep in mind that the repin numbers that you see on the popular pins that are showing up in the search include the latest repinners. So if you click to see the list, you'll see them in order, latest first. And that could be a few minutes old.

Would you be able describe a little bit more what you mean by pinterest/source/website.com? I think that could be a good strategy following people that are pinning things from targetted sites, however I'm just not sure what you mean by that URL.

never thought about the pinterest's search algorithm, gonna find out.. if anyone can tell the exactly how to rank pin in for any keyword in pinterest's search, it would be great
 
Looks like they have randomized the search result. You can see some pins are so old while some of those pins are done on same day or before. It's been like that for a while now.
 
I just found a interesting search result, try search "weightloss motivation" on pinterest.
Most top search result is from "change IN seconds".

"change IN seconds" got 4.9K Pins, and the board rank top got 20.7K pins.
the Pins ranked top from "change IN seconds" have almost same title like - Weight Loss Motivation #xx
and same description - Find more awesome #weightloss #motivation content on website

Also I have 60+ Pins got more than 100+ repin and likes in 3 days, but I never see my pins rank up.

My though is, seems Pinterest use a formula base by TIME.
-> the main factor to rank is the age of the pin.
-> recent repin is 2nd factor to rank top.
-> Who had repined, they may have divided user into several group and given each group a repin Weightage.
e.g: my pins been repind 200+ times in 3 days but the repinner have repin 200+ pins a day and may have no or few follower than the Weightage my Pin got is low.

any Idea?

I searched under "weightloss", "weightloss tips" and "weightloss plans". CIS is not in any of the top pins, though they dominate "weightloss motivation". Not sure what to make of it other than the niche is super competitive and CIS hasn't made any headway into the other keywords.

Maybe one way to approach the search algo is to pick one of the keywords from the suggestion drop down and focus on it. Have multiple different images, add keyword on the pin title with modifying words and get them pinned/repinned a lot of times.

I made the images, very original. I made 15+ original pins everyday. the traffic I got from home feed is not stable.
I plan to make my pin 100 day drip repin / like, see what will happened.

Also I try to repin with modify links, now my link got Pinterest warned that my link may lead to inpropreate content.
Is that warning means My domain is going to been banned?
 
Reading from this thread it looks like the Pinterest Search algorithm is hard to crack.

Sounds like you may have to work on the pin description so as to entice audience to click. They like the images enough to repin, they just now have to click. Also, just be sure you're putting the keywords in the rich pin titles to help rank in the search. If you're not using rich pins and you're producing original content, then apply for it.

Lastly, one thing we're finding out in BH is that editing links of popular repins is one way to get banned. Nowadays, Pinterest is removing the ability to edit URLs for repins. This may not be an issue in the future.

here's what I've done, make sure your images is unique or capture images and save with a file name your keyword, use rich pin, if you are using wordpress then name your file when uploaded write title and decription, make a secret board then pin your 50 images on your board, order some repin, 100 repins each pin.. then publish after 24 hours. check after 3 days using your different account and search your keyword. BoOm! your pin is on top search!! good luck

A couple of questions:

1) Do you mean to publish the board first then order repins? Otherwise, how can they repin if the board is secret.

2) Are your highest ranking pins the most pinned images as seen in your site's /source page? I'm theorizing that the strength of an image when it comes to whether or not it is shown in the homefeed correlates with how it is ranked in search.

Great tip on using secret boards to launch new images, btw.

very interesting method, gonna give it a try
 
Don't publish board yet.. while your board is unpublish order some repin. find service that cheap 1$ for 100 repins.. or search to get free, just copy your pin URL's

Yes i got highest ranking on pinterest search got 50 to 100 repins everyday on single pin.
Add pin image hover sharing on your site then just pin from your site to secret pin board

Make sure to see your competitors repins and likes and analyze how many repins and likes you need to get on top
If you can add likes also, 30 likes is good.

Other tips: Make a new account on pinterest focusing on your keyword. if your main keyword is "Wedding Dress" then make an account name " Wedding Dress" then use that account to comment on your pins with keyword" Wow! nice wedding dress" repin on you keyword account board. Make 10 boards on that account with your keyword example" Wedding Dress 2016" remember always put your keywords. Think first if your images is attractive for pinterest users. Focus on 2 main accounts with 5 to 10 accounts to comment. use 5 account for main keyword then use 5 account for fake name.

There's only one way to know, test it out yourself!

I've been toying with Pinterest, so hopefully I'll be able to find out some new trends in their search algorithm.

I remember you had a robust Pinterest and IG journies I was following. Are those still alive?
