I actually think it should rank better since it is a top level domain as opposed to second. No proof thoughI prefer the UK, but I know it's pretty new, so I have no idea how it is in terms of ranking.
I can register both, which one would you go for?You can only register the .uk if you have owned the .com .co.uk .org.uk .me.uk and a few other domain extensions before a certain date. Not sure what the date is, if you did not register before this certain date the .uk domain is on reserved till 2019 for the people who did register before this certain date.
Here is what Godaddy says about it
The registry has reserved these .uk domains for anyone who registered the matching .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk domains before June 10, 2014. Those registrants have until June 10, 2019 to claim their .uk domain.

This is actually the best tip, forget about redirecting, you don't know when your website might get burnt again. As above, I would register both, however I would not redirect the .uk, I would just leave it sitting around for a rainy day.
