It might be a stupid question but can anyone help advise?

yes, silly question. forget about counting backlinks. count means nothing. 1 link from real high authority site will give you more than any amount of spam links.

How long is a piece of string type question.

Depends on too many factors to give any type of accurate advice.
50 crappy backlinks will do almost nothing, yet 2 super links can make a massive difference.

Google as changed the algorithm now. More than quantity, quality is important. You should have 2 to 3 backlinks per week with the proper use of keyword and anchor text in it. Make sure to use the different anchor text every time. It won;r be helpful to have the thousand of the backlinks so never purchase them.

okay so one decent backlink can make a BIG difference?

It depends on the difficulty of the keyword and the quality of your backlinks.

What about the argument that i hear people make that you should have bulk backlinks for diversification purposes

Is that across the whole website or for one page?

Usually for the URL I want to rank. It's easier if it's the homepage (main domain), but I always start building links to homepage first, even if the url to rank is a subpage. Sometimes after getting decent links to homepage, some subpages start to rank on the domain authority just with good content.

The key is also having proper on-page. This way no matter what page you build links to, the link juice is distributed properly.

What would you say is more important to focus on as a start-up website.. on-site SEO or backlinks?

No answer here, some people claim they rank with 10 ultra back links.

i personally smash a lot of decent links and then infinite tiers below them (as much as I can)

this is a 15 000 month sv kw

Hey man, can you explain what a 15,000 month 'sv' 'kw' is?

In my opinion.. I consider on-page to be the foundation of SEO. Just like when they're building a house, they start with the foundation and go from there.
I'm not saying to forget about building links... but for a brand new website I would start setting up that foundation properly so in the future when I build links all the pages throughout the website will benefit from my backlinks.

Remember, on-page is something you will be doing as you add new content/pages. But it will be easier to do as you go along as you already built that foundation. Imagine you're 100 pages in... have some nice links but you're not ranking as you thought you would because you didn't worry about your "foundation". Now you will have to go back and fortify your foundation so your website can take advantage of all the links you've built.

Don't get me wrong, you will rank with bad on-site SEO but not as good as you would if you had good on-site.

Also, always have patience. Patience is key when doing SEO (life in general too, lol), I can't emphasize that enough.

I hope you understand my analogy lol and good luck with your project!

To conclude, your backlinking efforts will go further with proper on-page SEO (IMHO).
