Two websites with same content but in different languages?

Can I build two websites with the same design and same content, but in different languages, without being penalised? Should I may be use different hosting and whois, or should be 100% save because the language is different?

No problem.
Different language = diferent content.
I do this all the time

I usually put the foreign language version of the site on a matching foreign language TLD. Google seems to love it.

Sure, many big companies do this, including some huge ones like Amazon..

You can do something like this:

www.yoursite.com/en < English version
www.yoursite.com/fr < French version
....
You got the idea.

You can also use Google translator plugin or something like that so you will just place it on your website and users will be able to select the language they prefer but this isn't the best solution because of the mistakes during translation.

You should be able to do that without any problem, it's just a foreign version of your english website

That sounds like a good idea but I wonder if it would really make any real difference... do you think google would notice?

Thanks, do you think it will be better for seo to have two separate websites/domains or to let users select the language and use /es ?
